Automotive Engineering

Take the first step to getting your dream job in the automotive industry with this qualification. You’ll be taking vehicles apart, fitting tyres, doing servicing, locating and diagnosing electrical faults and learning how to manage customer enquiries.

Students will learn in the new automotive workshop at the Tai Poutini Polytechnic in Greymouth, which opened in January 2016. Key skills in the programme include a wide range of practical skills such as disassembling and reassembling a four stroke engine, dismantling engines, safe working practices and learning how to use tools and equipment in automotive workshops.

After completing this national programme you can get work as an apprentice in an automotive business or do further study at polytechnic in the automotive industry. After completing 2 years in this programme you will have a number of practical skills for working in the automotive industry such as tyre servicing, fault finding and basic servicing. The programme also provides theory components for students towards their driver’s license.
